The Vault Update: SMS Registration Delay Due to Manual Review by Phone Carriers
We want to keep you fully in the loop about a recent change affecting SMS activation in the United States inside The Vault.
Due to new carrier-level review requirements, US SMS registrations are currently taking longer than usual to be approved. This applies to SMS features connected to Conversations, automated messaging, and campaign tools within the platform.
What’s causing the delay?
US mobile carriers now require manual reviews of businesses before approving Application-to-Person (A2P) SMS registrations. As part of this process, carriers are actively reviewing:
- Business websites
- Privacy policies
- Opt-in and opt-out language
- Consent mechanisms for automated messaging
Because this review is handled directly by carriers, approvals are no longer instant.
What this means for you
- SMS registration approvals may take approximately 8–9 business days
- Your registration may show a status of “Pending” during this time
- SMS features will not activate until approval is complete
No action is needed once approval is granted — activation happens automatically.
We know delays like this can be frustrating, especially if you’re eager to launch or scale messaging. Thank you for your patience while approvals are processed.
What you can do to avoid delays or rejections
1. Privacy Policy Updates
Your website’s privacy policy must clearly state:
- Mobile information will not be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing purposes
- Clear instructions for “STOP” to opt out and “HELP” for assistance
2. Web Form Opt-In Consent
Any form collecting phone numbers must:
- Include an unchecked opt-in checkbox
- Clearly state consent for automated messaging
- Include STOP opt-out language
3. Web Chat & AI Consent
For automated outbound messages initiated through chat:
- Explicit user consent is required
- The Vault automatically enables a compliant opt-in question to meet this requirement
